Baldwin Drive - Orange & Black
By the end of the summer of '06, Joe was finished with his
latest batch of songs and set off to find a producer that shared
his musical taste and sensibility to help record them. His
search ended when he and producer / guitarist Stephen Butler had
a nice long chat after playing a Mary Lee's Corvette gig
together at NYC's the Cutting Room. Once the executive producer
from Thunder Ridge Records was on board, it was time to make a
record.
Of course keys and guitars do not a record make. Steve got in
touch with long time friends
Fran Smith Jr., bass player for
The Hooters, and studio
drummer Greg DiDonato,
and the package was complete. Within two weeks they had recorded
basics for five of the ten tunes that would be "ORANGE & BLACK".
We all know working with great players is one of the best things
about making records. That ..., and the catering. Every now and
then you get lucky and the stars align, paths re-cross, and you
get to work together again. That being said, a few years back
Joe co- wrote and recorded the anthem for the local arena
football team, the New York City Hawks. With Jimi K Bones on
guitar, Kurt on bass, Gene on vox, and Aaron Brooks on drums.
They thumped and pumped away LIVE at Madison Square Garden
treating the disillusioned crowd to classic covers. Often
drawing more attention then the lame Hawks. Sure the team
sucked. But the cheerleaders were hot, and new friends were made
and old friendships stoked. It was quite clear that if the fates
and schedules allowed, the boys would somehow, someday work
together again. And sure enough, this would come to be. In
various places, on various projects.
On a far too bright and sunny Saturday morning, Aaron, with mind
and body still ringing from the previous night's gig at the Red
Lion, made his way into the city and found his way to the
awaiting car. With gear checked and Aaron aboard, they headed
south to Steve's studio to fulfill a promise that Joe had made
to himself all those years ago. Get Aaron on the record. Over
the next couple of weeks, in and around Steve's gigs, Fran's
gigs and Aaron's gigs - the remaining four songs were recorded.
On a cold January afternoon, Joe and Steve recorded the tenth
and final track for the record "Step out of the Nightmare".
Bloody symbolic...
